“One Woman’s Voice: Tatiana Proskouriakoff’s Impact on 20th Century Maya Archaeology”

Since 2002, the year her biography of Tatiana Proskouriakoff, was published, freelance writer/teacher Char Solomon has given presentations on the life and work of this great 20th century Maya scholar at museums, libraries, universities and organizations around the country. Solomon worked as a volunteer assistant to Proskouriakoff at the Peabody Museum of Harvard from 1972-’73 and for four field seasons as a field assistant with Ian Graham’s Corpus of Maya Hieroglyphic Inscriptions Project. In 1976, she married Tom Oakley, and after living and working in Perugia, Italy, they settled in North Carolina and started their family. It has been their home ever since. Besides writing, Solomon has taught private music lessons from her home studio for forty-six years. She is a devoted gardener, enjoys making music, traveling, and spending time with her husband and their two adult children and extended family.
