Lady Six Sky: Her Life and Afterlife

with Zac Lindsey, IMS Board Member

Few ancient Maya rulers have made a mark on contemporary culture, but Naranjo ruler Lady Six Sky is the subject of video games, art, and romance novels. Ix Wak Chan Jalam Lem, usually known as Lady Six Sky today, was a warrior, a patron of the arts, and an astronomer who led the city of Naranjo through one of its most important political phases. However, she was ignored by later rulers of the city, and her legacy was largely forgottenuntil the 20th century. In this presentation, IMS board member Zac Lindsey will take you through the life and times of Lady Six Sky. But more than that, you’ll see how she was “resurrected” as a modern pop culture figure and became one of the most well-known Maya rulers, as well as the small role the Institute of Maya Studies played in that resurrection. Who was she and what did she stand for? How was she defined by a war she was born into? And how did she go from the daughter of an usurper to the leader of the “Mayan Empire” in the game Civilization VI?
